VVMM ransomware is a virus that aims to encrypt files on Windows-running computers. It is a recognized variant of STOP/DJVU ransomware. Once it launches on the system, it begins scanning all folders and encrypts files in them, adding a .vvmm extension afterward. For example, filenames such as 1.jpg and 2.docx will be turned into 1.jpg.vvmm and 2.docx.vvmm after the attack. Once files are encrypted and their filenames modified, no program will be capable of opening them. In addition, the virus drops ransom note file named _readme.txt in several data folders.

The ransom note briefly explains that the victim has to purchase VVMM file decryption tool from the cybercriminals, implying that the cybercriminals expect the victim to pay a ransom to them. According to the note, the price of the decryption tool is $980, but whoever contacts the criminals within 72 hours after being attacked will get a 50% discount, lowering the decryption service price to $490.

The note then explains that the only way to restore files is by using the decryption tool and key kept by the ransomware operators. They insist that the victim should contact them via provided emails – support@freshmail.top or datarestorehelp@airmail.cc and attach sample of encrypted file along with user’s Personal ID (provided at the very end of the ransom note). The cybercriminals promise they would prove that they actually can recover all of victim’s files. This way, they try to encourage the victim to pay a ransom.

However, paying a ransom is NOT A RECOMMENDED option, because it does not guarantee data recovery and it simply encourages cybercrime. On top of that, the threat actors might start demanding more money after the initial payment, or try to target you in their future attacks. Download the decryption tool from Emsisoft.
Click the little arrow next to your download and choose Show in Folder.
Now, right-click the file and choose Run as Administrator. If asked, enter administrator's password.
In UAC window, click Yes.
Click Yes to agree to software terms in both windows.
The tool will automatically include C:// disk as a location to decrypt. The file recovery tool will prepopulate the locations to scan, including connected data storage drives or network drives. Click Add folder if you wish to add additional locations.
In Options tab, you can choose to keep encrypted file copies. We recommend leaving this option selected, especially if you do not know if the decryption tool will work.
Click Decrypt to start restoring VVMM files. You will see the progress in the Results tab. Here, you can see messages from the tool, such as whether the decryption procedure is successful, or you need to wait for an update.

If you were informed that an offline key was used, but files could not be restored, it means that the offline decryption key isn't available yet. However, receiving this message is extremely good news, meaning that it might be possible to restore your VVMM extension files in the future.
