VVWQ ransomware virus is the latest threat from the STOP/DJVU ransomware group facing computer users globally. This virus is similar in nature to the previous ones in the series and was basically developed to be used as a cyber-extortion tool. The motive is to encrypt the files of their victims, and demand them to pay ransoms in exchange for data decryption tools the crooks would promise to provide. This ransomware automatically encrypts all data stored on computers and also puts an additional .vvwq extension to every filename. Random files that were previously saved with names such as 1.jpg or 3.jpeg would transform to 1.jpg.vvwq and 3.jpeg.vvwq, and same would be repeated on all other files.
While these activities are still taking place, messages known as _readme.txt would be released by the cybercriminals. The _readme.txt is more or less ransom notifications informing the victim why they have to pay ransom fees to enable them receive decryption tools. In addition to that, the cybercriminals would also drop two email addresses i.e. support@bestyourmail.ch and supportsys@airmail.cc, while suggesting that the victim should communicate with them using either of the two emails.
Peradventure, the victim decides to write to them, and they would reply by stating that a ransom fee of $980 has to be paid. Also, they would claim that a 50% ransom fee slash would be acceptable provided the victim is able to pay it within 3 days of being informed to do so. However, they would warn that payment must be made with the use of cryptocurrency.
Regardless, any form of payment to cybercriminals is strongly condemned both by the FBI and other relevant cyber-security agencies. Below are the logical reasons they gave for being against ransom payment to cybercriminals:
Even though VVWQ ransomware virus is the primary virus, there are other equally dangerous malware variants known as RATs that usually distributed alongside it. RAT stands for Remote Access Trojan and is configured to steal and transmit important personal information such as passwords, cryptocurrency wallets, banking details, and software login details etc. Once the cybercriminals obtain such sensitive details, it makes it possible for them to commit further crimes against the victim. Two of such Trojans that are usually found alongside STOP/DJVU versions during analysis are VIDAR and AZORULT.
That is why it is very important to remove VVWQ ransomware virus once it is detected in a computer. In order to do it safely, we recommend following the instructions provided below this article. A combination of software that we use is your favourite antivirus as well as tools like RESTORO (secure download link) that can be used to repair virus-altered Windows OS files.

The cyberspace is really not safe enough for computer users to operate carelessly. Precautionary measures need to be taken at all times. Therefore, activities such as downloading of software from unsafe places like online torrents platforms, peer-to-peer sharing platforms, and the use of storage devices for multiple systems should all be avoided. Likewise, the opening of random emails and attachments from unknown sources are other means cybercriminals use in spreading malware to unsuspecting computer users.
Due to awareness being created on the dos and don’ts pertaining to safe use of a computer, cybercriminals are also trying to device new means of catching their victims unawares. They’re aware that some computer users don’t like paying for the cost of software as requested by their producers, so they now resort to cloning such software contents, especially those that are in high demand. Afterward, they would embed malware on them and upload to online torrent platforms for unsuspecting users to download, and by so doing infect their computer with the virus. You can check the list below for some of the popular software copies often cloned by cybercriminals:
It is important for computer users to always note that paying for the cost of original software copies as advertised by the copyright owners is the best thing to do. Any other means of obtaining it is illegal and can result to severe losses in terms of lost documents, time, money and even emotional damage.
Cybercriminals also find some files like PDF, DOCX and XLS among similar ones handy because of their macro function abilities that make it possible for them to embed, transport and trigger malware in other computers.
These files were created for genuine reasons even though cybercriminals have decided to take advantage of them. The most disturbing aspect of STOP/DJVU ransomware virus encryptions is that they’re mostly irreversible. Therefore, the best solution to it is to take preventive measures. Although there are sites that often advertise about decryption tools, but such tools are hardly effective. So far, only the pair of DiskTuna and Emsisoft have shown results in creating reliable recovery tools.
From what can be deduced, this computer virus is highly dangerous and can remain latent in computer systems if they’re not removed safely and effectively. Genuine antivirus software would be required to remove VVWQ ransomware virus. However, before applying it, you will need to set up the infected computer using Safe Mode with the Networking option.
Now you must have completed the VVWQ ransomware virus removal; other important steps need to be taken, as outlined below:
In summary, you should always avoid the risk factors that could put your computer at risk of a ransomware attack, as compiled in this article, because that’s the surest way of staying safe.

It is reported that STOP/DJVU ransomware versions encrypt only the beginning 150 KB of each file to ensure that the virus manages to affect all files on the system. In some cases, the malicious program might skip some files at all. That said, we recommend testing this method on several big (>1GB) files first.
STOP/DJVU ransomware versions are grouped into old and new variants. VVWQ Ransomware Virus is considered the new STOP/DJVU variant, just like OOXA, HHYU, VVWQ, VVEO, VVEW, VVYU (find full list here). This means full data decryption is now possible only if you have been affected by offline encryption key. To decrypt your files, you will have to download Emsisoft Decryptor for STOP DJVU, a tool created and maintained by a genius security researcher Michael Gillespie.
Note! Please do not spam the security researcher with questions whether he can recover your files encrypted with online key - it is not possible.
In order to test the tool and see if it can decrypt VVWQ files, follow the given tutorial.
The VVWQ decryption tool might display several different messages after failed attempt to restore your files. You might receive one of the following messages:
Error: Unable to decrypt file with ID: [example ID]
This message typically means that there is no corresponding decryption key in the decryptor's database.
No key for New Variant online ID: [example ID]
Notice: this ID appears to be an online ID, decryption is impossible
This message informs that your files were encrypted with online key, meaning no one else has the same encryption/decryption key pair, therefore data recovery without paying the criminals is impossible.
Result: No key for new variant offline ID: [example ID]
This ID appears to be an offline ID. Decryption may be possible in the future.
If you were informed that an offline key was used, but files could not be restored, it means that the offline decryption key isn't available yet. However, receiving this message is extremely good news, meaning that it might be possible to restore your VVWQ extension files in the future. It can take a few months until the decryption key gets found and uploaded to the decryptor. We recommend you to follow updates regarding the decryptable DJVU versions here. We strongly recommend backing up your encrypted data and waiting.
Victims of VVWQ Ransomware Virus should report the Internet crime incident to the official government fraud and scam website according to their country:
If you can't find an authority corresponding to your location on this list, we recommend using any search engine to look up "[your country name] report cyber crime". This should lead you to the right authority website. We also recommend staying away from third-party crime report services that are often paid. It costs nothing to report Internet crime to official authorities.
Another recommendation is to contact your country's or region’s federal police or communications authority.
You can only open VVWQ files if you have the decryption key, or if you were affected by offline encryption type.
To figure out whether you were affected by offline encryption, please go to C:/SystemID/PersonalID.txt and see if the string inside of it ends in t1. You can also try using Emsisoft Decryptor for STOP/DJVU.
Please follow the guidances provided by the official VVWQ decryption tools and believe what they say. If they say it is impossible to decrypt, it really is so. There is no magic tool or human capable of decrypting your files hiding somewhere. Encryption is a technique created to be nearly impossible to decrypt without a special private key (held by the criminals).
We advise scanning with anti-virus, anti-malware, malware removal tools or software like RESTORO to eliminate virus damage on the system. If you do not trust using a single tool, try running one after another. However, we do not recommend keeping several security programs on a computer at once as they can interfere with each other's work.
Beware of fake VVWQ decryption tools circulating around the web. Cyber criminals are uploading them to various shady websites, also might be promoting them via suspicious Youtube videos. These programs can infect your computer even more heavily (Trojans, miners, etc.). We suggest being extremely cautious around the web. If there will be an official STOP/DJVU decryption tool available, it will be widely discussed in public media.
